Tomb Raider Exclusivity: IT HURTS US

So I originally wrote the below article BEFORE we found out that Rise of the Tomb Raider was going to be a 'timed exclusive'. This still doesn't change my mind that although I believe in exslusivity as a business practice, the way that Square Enix and Microsoft


So, the news has just come out that Rise of the Tomb Raider is going to be a XBOX 1 exclusive. Although console exclusive games are nothing new, this particular instance frustrates me. Console exclusivity seem to the drive wedge of modern console wars. They will continue to be a main selling point for consumers to buy that particular console, but it shouldn’t be the main selling point.

For example, while I dream that Halo would be released for PC one day, it just isn't going to happen. But, I'm not angry about that. Halo was one of the main selling points when XBOX 1 came out and continues to be that for XBOX to this day. However, when you take a game that has already been on 3 platforms and did tremendously well and make it an exclusive for one platform, for money, that annoys me.

When the new Tomb Raider came out, I LOVED it! It was a great game that left me wanting more. The graphics were and are still some of the best I've seen, the story and characters were great and the gameplay was probably the best I've seen in modern games. It even had the best first week sales in franchise history I completed that game while eagerly awaiting for a sequel and even though I don't pre-order games anymore; this one would be a quick purchase. It really was one of the best games I've played.

Then, the trailer for its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider came out & everyone was extremely excited for it. A great squeal made by the same developers who made the successfully original game was going to come out! We were all giggling like school girls for a few months until we found out that it was going to be an exclusive. THIS KILLED THE CONSUMERS!

This kills the consumer

As stated above I completely understand exclusivity & have accepted it as a business practice. It is just that this time, the way that executed it really pisses me off. You take a game that made over 6 million in sales across multiple platforms and thrust it into the bosom of XBONE exclusivity so that only the heathens can access it. I understand that Square Enix probably got a decent amount money for the exclusivity, but is that money really worth sacrificing the fans of 2 other platforms and causing outrage within the gaming community? You are cutting out two platforms of gamers who would gladly pay MONEY for the chance to play it on their respective platform.

It definitely is possible that they will release this 'exclusive' game down the road after a set amount of time, but it would just be better for everyone if they initially released these games across all 3 modern platforms. Even the original Tomb Raider helped push the PS1 forward and that even had a PC counterpart. I'm not saying every single game needs to be on all 3 modern platforms, but if you release one on all platforms and then make the decision to release the next only on another just for money, you will learn the ire of the gaming community and only care about money, not the fans that made you popular in the first place.

Square Enix, you are a bosh'tet.
