New Apartment = New Computer/Networking Setup.

So I just got an apartment with my girlfriend Nidhi and you can guess what that means...

I already have my desktop system setup, so it's just the simple matter of connecting everything together again...

I've built this system up over the last couple of years. Some of the prices are extremely inflated for some reason.

That is my main machine for work/gaming/everything else. I have an Ubuntu VM on it for some dev work until I get my home lab setup.

The Network

Since I have my own place now that also has an unfinished part, I have the perfect place to setup a home networking area. You may be thinking, "Why spend all of this money if Comcast can just give you an all in one piece?". Well, I did this myself (with Antons help) because...

  • Comcast equipment sucks.
  • This is MUCH better equipment.
  • Better equipment means faster speeds and more room for expansion (like my home lab).
  • No bloatware.

It mainly consist of 4 different devices.

A Modem

A Router

EdgeRouter Lite by Ubiquiti

A Switch

NetGear ProSafe 8port Gigabite Switch
This switch connects to

  • The router for uplink.
  • Samsung Smart TV
  • PoE Injector for the WiFi Access Point
  • My Desktop

WiFi Access Point

Ubiquiti UniFi Access Point

The Whole Shebang

Speed Test

Comcast has a deal with our development so we get free Internet and Cable until Febuary. We are rated for 50down and 10 up (I pay an extra 10 a month to upgrade from basic) and the speeds we actually get are actually better.

All The Internets

So with a setup like this I have a wide range of performance and expansion. The speed is more than enough for multiple streams of Plex/Netflix and backups running at the same time.

It'll also give me the expansion needed for my homelab setup coming in the next couple of months. This will house:

  • 8-12 TB FreeNAS systems
  • 1-3 VM's for WebDev/App Dev, Database Server and a Plex/multimedia server.
